When I was 12 years old I watched the Kennedy inauguration on TV and heard Robert Frost. I did something very naughty and lied about my age to join the BOMC so that I could get his book of poetry. I did use my babysitting money to fulfill my membership. I might not understand what Frost wanted me to understand, but there is a deep beauty to his work and that reached in and grabbed my heart.

I think what matters most is what grabs your heart. I love that phrase. May you find more of that in the deep beauty of this life!

Across maybe forty years I've written 8 "riffs" on Frost's poem. His work always resonates with me ... we share a birthday ...my mother heard him read when she was in college in the 1930's. So this is wonderful because of that, but also because of the prompt for reflection and planning.

I had not remembered that you had composed versions of this poem. Thank you for sending me on the hunt! I see there is one even from this year so one might think that memory would be fresh but my favorite, that I found is this one, perhaps because I hope it is where my prayers will lead too. https://giftsinopenhands.wordpress.com/2016/02/24/5581/

What a lovely way to start this gorgeous fall morning. I loved reading every word of this post, Elsa. I’m finding the simplicity of it, perhaps ironically, profound. In our complex and conflicted world with so many invitations to overthinking the fact that the simple message can breakthrough is by itself astonishing…..seek justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God.

And as for the poem itself - one of my favorites as it was my mother’s….and Fall my favorite season….as it was my mother’s. In college my chorus sang Randall Thompson’s version of The Road Not Taken, so I have the additional benefit of being able to have a melody in my head when I encounter the words even all these years later.

Good morning Lynn! Glad to be part of your morning -- and thank you so much for the gift of this song. I had no idea that a sung version existed! What a wonderful way to encounter these words.
