With Halloween around the corner, I’ve actually taken out my sewing box and started stitching things together. We will be having a Halloween party next month for my daughter’s birthday and hoping to share with German friends what makes this holiday fun for us.
I didn’t pack my sewing machine so these Tinkerbell and unicorn costumes are being assembled by thrifted clothing, some hand stitching and a whole lot of tulle. Hand stitching reminds me that creation is so slow sometimes. It’s imperfect and there are dropped stitches. Sometimes it’s just a mess but there is something worth making. That’s what I’m thinking about in this patchwork of stuff this month.
Now that school is back in session, I have been doing a lot more art school art projects with my little ones. Art was a major outlet for me in my earlier years and I’m discovering (again) how to share it with my children. I really loved this experience with art and music that I’m wondering how to use with my directees.
My children are currently fascinated by pianos as they are in nearly every train station we enter and they just let kids go wild without any qualms. So I skipped the suggestion in the link above and opted for this more familiar classical piece. Give it a listen and notice what you hear and maybe break out some crayons in response.
My husband and I have been attempting to be weekday vegetarians. Well, I am the one who prepares the meals. So my husband is often rather sour about this especially when I dare to ask. “What would you like to eat this week?” He always wants meat but we both loved these Cauliflower Steaks with Hummus and Gremolata. We’ve tried just roasting florets but there really is something about preparing the steak even if I loathe the food waste.
There are times where I need to hear a good sermon and this is a really Good Word from a colleague in the United Church of Christ preached from this passage in Matthew. I won’t comment any further but I hope you’ll listen and remember all that you are creating.
What tidbits are you stitching together creatively right now? What are you risking and aren’t sure you’ll ever complete? What are your hands busy doing right now? What are those sparks of creativity are carrying you out of September?
If you are interested in spiritual direction and are interested in a first conversation with me, please reach out or go ahead and book an appointment here. I am currently welcoming new directees and would be delighted to explore the holy threads of this life with you.
THANKS, ELSA. IT'S BEEN QUITE A WHILE SINCE I'VE OPENED "PRAYER THREADS" BECAUSE I'M BUSIER AS A SEMI- RETIRED PREACHER THAN I WAS WHEN I WAS ACTIVELY SERVING A CHURCH. ALL THE VOLUNTEERING! IT'S A BLESSING TO KNOW YOU AND YOUR LOVES ONES ARE WELL. BRUCE BURNHAM, OLD TOWN, MAINE
