Questions are at the heart of our faith. We search for meaning in our lives. We interrogate scared texts. We wonder who and what God is. Every thing hinges on our curiosity.
Albert Einstein believed, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”
I believe God welcomes our questions and invites our curiosity to know more about ourselves and about our God. Each question challenges us and refocuses us. We learn. We grow in frustration and rage. We discover things we didn’t know before we were brave enough to ask.
Questions help us to untangle all of the threads to discover what really matters. We stitch those truths together to make beauty with our lives.
My directees are always commenting on the questions that I ask. They love them and hate them all at once. The mysterious wonder of spiritual direction is that I don’t know what happens with all the questions I ask. Sometimes I can see how that question reorients our conversation but I really believe that these pesky wonderings are the work of God and God’s work is slow. Questions live in us and no one really knows how they change us. I believe they do and so I wanted to make room for all of these questions in this newsletter starting with this one.
As you feel so moved, you might add your thoughts in the comments or hit reply and share with me directly. I welcome your thoughts and ideas but I am more interested in how you share this question with God.
Take it into your prayer time. Journal it. Walk with it. Scrub at it while you do the dishes. Give space for this question and all of the other questions and may God surprise you.
If you are interested in spiritual direction and are interested in a first conversation with me, please reach out or go ahead and book an appointment here. I am currently welcoming new directees and would be delighted to explore the holy threads of this life with you.
