My grandmother used to crochet blankets like the one pictured above. I’ve been thinking about that one blanket that was always on the back of the couch. I used to stick my fingers through it while it was wrapped around me. My fingers would wiggle through the vibrant colors and I couldn’t help but marvel at how warm I felt even when there were so many holes.
There are plenty of holes in my life right now. Lots of them probably if I really focused but this month I’m feeling held in warmth and light. Even with all that is broken in this world, I can’t help but marvel at the many colors.
Here are a few things that are giving my spirit color this month.
There are so many talented and wonderful spiritual directors out there doing amazing things which is why I always invite any potential directees to take the time they need to discern if we are the right fit. Spiritual Direction for Writers, created by Charlotte Donlon, is full of goodness and I was delighted to be invited into the this retreat shared on Instagram. I encourage you to allow yourself this 40 minutes and welcome the wonder of retreat as something as simple as this.
If you see the word writer and think that doesn't apply to you, I urge you to push past that judgment and welcome this sacred invitation to retreat.
I added so many books to my cart this past month but also managed to read a few that have been collecting dust on my bookshelf including Ann Kansfield’s Be the Brave One. I admire Ann’s honesty and the authentic way she engages with the world. She is one that loves big and it’s a delight to read this invitation to align ourselves with what we value most. In fact, it became the inspiration for June Threads which will appear on the internets very soon.
As the days are getting warmer, I’ve been on a bit of a salad kick. My body is craving more vegetables. We have tried a bunch of new recipes because I love to try new things but this Crispy Rice Salad with Cucumbers and Herbs totally knocked our socks off. It doesn’t sound like any of these things should come together well — but it is so good! This recipe also works well with throwing in some other veggies not listed: shredded carrots, chopped peppers and even some finely shredded cabbage.
We spent a weekend — that happened to be Mother’s Day weekend — in the most beautiful place at a campground and it was just wonderful. We dragged our kids on long hikes along mountain trails with the most breathtaking views and it made me grateful just to be breathing this air. The world can be so beautiful. Thank God.
As you reflect on the past month, here are some questions to ponder.
Where are you finding vibrant colors?
What is giving you comfort and hope?
How are you finding beauty as the calendar turns to June?
